Video-gamer is now flying as an apprentice drone pilot

Joshua Fisher-Lambert, 19, is an Apprentice Trainee Surveyor with Quantum Survey Management on Brightside Lane and is thought to be one of the first to soon be operating the industry’s latest tool - remotely-piloted aircraft systems fitted with specialist cameras that cost thousands and can measure huge areas in minutes.

Joshua said: “This has to be my dream job. As a child I loved my remote control toy helicopters – now I’m learning to fly real drones for a living. They are far bigger and more expensive but are actually a lot easier to control. And I’ve been told that a major plus is my strong to hand-to-eye coordination skills, which were honed from many years of video-gaming!”

Joshua had planned to study engineering at university after gaining a manufacturing engineering diploma at Kirklees College but decided he wanted to get hands-on experience as he learned. He started hunting for an interesting apprenticeship just as Quantum SM’s team had decided to provide an in-house drone-surveying service.

Budding Florist Climbs from Apprentice to Trainee Manager

April Bell, from Hillsborough, first started working for Monica F Hewitt Florists over six years ago on a work experience placement when she was just 14. Since then she has worked hard to gain qualifications in Floristry, Retail and Retail Skills Management and is currently working towards a qualification in Business and Admin with The Source Skills Academy. April didn’t enjoy school and didn’t have high expectations for herself, but has discovered abilities she didn’t know she was capable of by learning in the workplace.

Starting as an Apprentice Florist Assistant, April has thrived in the floristry environment and her keen eye for detail meant she was soon producing work to a professional standard. With thanks to her positive attitude and hard work she has worked her way up to take on a multitude of roles including trainee manager, wedding coordinator, corporate coordinator, training supervisor and demonstrator. April is involved in the everyday running of the business including managing staff, dealing with paperwork, operating end of day total sales and accounts as well as managing emails and social media. She also trains new apprentices and is responsible for providing floral demonstrations at classes and events.

April has been working on promoting the shop’s products to a younger target market. Trading for over 40 years, the business has built up a foundation of regular customers but April recognises that it’s important to also target the younger market and her work on social media is helping with this.

Apprentice Colby lands Management role for Rotherham Workwear Supplier

Colby Henry left college with good qualifications and a keen interest in Design Graphics. Rather than applying for university, he decided to try an apprenticeship and was taken on as a Design Apprentice in BH Industrial’s print department. The Rotherham-based company supplies workwear and signage for many small and large businesses including Next, DHL, Wren Kitchens and Aldi.

Colby, now aged 21, said: “I wasn’t convinced by university and when I found out more about apprenticeships, the idea of continuing to learn whilst working really appealed to me.”

The match was a success and as a result of his outstanding enthusiasm and hard work, Colby was soon promoted to Print Department Manager where he continues to impress the business owners with his flare for the job. His course in Business and Admin Level 2, attained through The Source Skills Academy, has given him the confidence to address any issues that arise and to improve the efficiency of their systems and procedures. After seeing a gap in the market, Colby suggested the company expand their work to produce signage; an idea which now generates a significant amount of the company’s sales.
